Judging by what we see on television and read online, many of us would believe that erectile dysfunction is a condition experienced exclusively by older men.
Every commercial or advertisement we see involving these drugs revolves around a middle aged or older man, typically living it up on some beach during their retirement years. The idea that a man’s sex life just continually goes downhill as they age is another trend that is continually being perpetuated in movies and television.
It is no surprise then to learn that many young men aren’t concerned about their ability to perform at all, as they believe that they still have plenty of time to worry about it.
While it is true that your chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction increases with age, that doesn’t necessarily mean that young men are home free in that regard. Many other factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction, especially things like diabetes and obesity, which affect many young people as well as the elderly.
A study that was just completed this year which took a look at the rates of erectile dysfunction in younger men in the United States revealed some unfortunate statistics. The authors of this study estimated that about half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience some form of erectile dysfunction, and 30% men in between the ages of 18-25 experienced some form as well.
These new findings definitely seem troublesome given what we now know about how frequent erectile dysfunction occurs within young men. With that being said many of the causes of erectile dysfunction have to do with lifestyle choices, and thus it can be corrected.
How Can a Young Man Get ED?
A man’s ability to get an maintain an erection is strongly linked to the health of their cardiovascular system. This is because an erection is gained through proper blood flow distribution in the body, which is controlled by the cardiovascular system.
When our blood vessels which carries this blood get damaged, they don’t work as well as they should, or in some cases don’t work at all. While the degradation other these blood vessels is due partially to age, other factors contribute to this as well.
One of the things that has the biggest impact on our cardiovascular system is our diet. A diet high in sugar, triglycerides and trans fats is a good recipe for disaster when it comes to your sex life. Trans fats and triglycerides are going to cause plaque buildup and clog your arteries; while sugar acts as an abrasive which cuts and tears through the walls of the blood vessels.
Your diet is huge here, so make sure it consists mainly of whole foods, foods which are nutritionally dense and full of fiber. Stay away from baked goods, fast food, and prepared frozen meals whenever possible.
Another problem that can negatively impact your ability to perform is hormonal disruption within the body. Conditions like diabetes or an overactive thyroid gland for example can cause severe weight gain, which in turn can cause erectile dysfunction.
Diabetes can also do damage to our nerves throughout the body, and this also affects the ability to perform. Our blood flow is not only controlled by the heart and cardiovascular system, but by our nerves as well.
Our nerves are what the body uses to signal the opening, or dilation of our blood vessels which allows for the proper flow of blood. Damage to the nerves which control this can cause the blood vessels to remain constricted, in turn restricting blood flow which is bad when it comes to getting an erection.
Diabetes is usually the result of a bad diet, however it can also be reversed in many cases as well. Just try to avoid those foods high in transfats, triglycerides, LDL, and sugar.
Side Effects of Medications
Side effects due to medications is another area where many younger people don’t have too much experience, as they are generally more healthy than the older population. Younger people typically are only on a small amount of medications if any at all, so this is usually an afterthought.
It shouldn’t be though, as something as minor as an anti-inflammatory drug can affect your ability to perform. Certain prescription anti psychotic medications are another group of drugs that can also influence your ability to perform which you should also be aware of.
If you aren’t sure whether or not your prescription is the cause of your erectile problems, talk to your doctor as they may be able to switch you to a medication that won’t affect your sex life.
