Knowing how sex and your brain are connected can really help you when it comes to your sexual experience, and it comes with a host of positive side effects as well. Our ability to have sex and perform is an indication of how healthy we are as well, further giving insight to how interconnected our health is with sex.
The brain is the most complicated organ in our bodies, and much still is not understood about it. With that being said, we are starting to discover definitive links between the two. So how exactly can sex affect how we think and act?
1-Sex Makes You Feel Good
Sex makes us feel great. Everyone knows this, and this one of many reasons why our sex drive is so high. The good feeling we get from having sex has to do with what is going on within our brains, in the release of a neurotransmitter called dopamine.
This is the chemical our bodies use to stimulate the euphoric or good feeling that we experience. These are the same pathways that are activated by drugs like caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines and other drugs, hence a similar experience during sex.
2-Having Sex Can Help Relieve Pain
One of the biggest excuses everyone gives when they don’t want to have sex is that they have a headache. Whether they are telling the truth or not, it is always believable as it is a common issue that many people suffer from.
If you are someone that suffers from headaches, even the more debilitating ones such as migraines; having more sex can help you. Research has shown that it can do this in the release of euphoric hormones during sex help to mask the pain, meaning they are less likely to feel it.
It also may help reduce pain in women through the release of hormones with pain relieving properties, like the ones released by the body during childbirth.
3-Shown the Ability to Improve Memory
One of the things we aren’t too sure of when it comes to the brain is how the cells grow and regenerate. The cells in our brain are different than the cells virtually everywhere else in our body, as they do not reproduce and grow like other tissues do.
This led to the belief which many of us were told for years- that once you lose your brain cells they are gone forever. The more you lose, the less functional the brain becomes which can be a pretty frightening thought, as there are plenty of ways which you can lose them.
Luckily however recent studies have shown the opposite, in that there are certain ways in which we can grow back brain cells. Exercising more, learning new things and now sex are all things which have been proven to increase neurogenesis, or the growth of these neurons. You can now add improved memory and cognitive ability to the list of reasons why you should be having more sex.
4-Helps You Get to Sleep
Sleep makes you sleepy, which is something many people are well aware of. Pretty much every guy is guilty of passing out after sex from time to time, and now we know the science behind why that is.
Many people have the perception or viewpoint that men tend to be the ones who fall asleep more often than women, and they would be right. After ejaculation part of the brain starts to wind down, which is due to the release of serotonin and other hormones making us just want to sleep.
The same is true for women as well, so remember to return the favor. You’ll both be able to relax afterwards in peace.
